Here are some tips we’ve found when posting animals that make a huge difference in finding the right home for your dog:
- Always post with super cute photos showing his/her personality, both front and side views. Although it’s great to include photos of your pet interacting with humans or other pets, try to crop out human body parts (wayward feet, hands, etc.) as they are distracting. Show off your pet smiling, playing with toys, etc. so his/her personality shines.
- Pet Description:
- Get creative with the description of your pet! Funny antics, and details about their personality traits are great.
- Use descriptive words such as: comedian, cuddly, athlete, etc.
- Include weight and age in your description.
- Although people want to know why you are choosing to rehome your pet, don’t provide a laundry list of negative traits. Use your description to show off the animal. Be honest towards the end of your description if he or she doesn’t get along with other pets or has medical issues an adopter needs to know about but don’t give details. Provide those details when you have the opportunity to speak with a serious potential adopter.
- Always charge a minimal rehoming fee and indicate that fee will go to support a local rescue group if that’s feasible. You want to ensure potential adopters can afford the food and medical care your pet needs and deserves while also making every effort they don’t fall into the wrong hands.
- Provide complete contact information and how/ when best to contact you. Be sure to respond and follow-up!
- Once you have communicated with someone online, schedule a phone call. You’ll receive much more information from a person by speaking with them then you will ever receive via email, text or on Facebook.
- We have created a generic Adoption Application we highly recommend sharing with potential adopters. Don’t coordinate a meet and greet until you’ve received a completed application and contacted their personal and vet references. If someone is not up-to-date on their pet’s vaccinations, it is a good indicator as to how they will care for your pet.
- Ask for photos and videos of the potential adopters’ home if you’re unable to do an in-person home check. You’ll want to see where your dog will be eating, sleeping, playing, their yard, etc. This too, will provide you with invaluable insight.
- Once you have your pet posted on Adopt-A-Pet, email us at: [email protected] with a link to their profile. Almost Home Dog Rescue NC will periodically post a group of local dogs looking for new homes and will link to the profile you’ve created. Be sure to let us know if your pet is adopted!
